I tried several times to go to sleep last night, but my chronic insomnia just wouldn’t relent for one lousy night, so I find myself sat here, less than an hour before I need to “get up” to start the long journey to LAN. For me and Dr Gonzo the LAN adventure began in earnest last night when I picked him up at Leeds train station. Our evening consisted of a few beers, one huge pizza and the driest garlic bread ever made. The two of us like the sound of our own voice entirely too much - as many of you can attest – so it’s no surprise that we gave our vocal cords a good workout as copious amounts of amusing chatter flowed back and forth. I am sure he won’t mind my stealing his thunder with this first diary post – we agreed that we’d both do a diary and express our different experiences and viewpoints on the weekend’s proceedings.
I’ve been to quite few LAN events now, including several I-series, yet I find myself in the unusual position of not knowing precisely what to expect of i32. This will be the first LAN event that I have ever attended as a non-participant. It’s very disconcerting; there is no air of expectancy, no pre-LAN jitters, no eager anticipation of victory and no idle speculation about where I’ll finish this time around. The one saving grace of not competing at this event is that I don’t have to lug my over-sized, water-cooled beast of a PC down with me. Okay that was an out and out lie. That would have been the one saving grace, if it weren’t foiled by the powers that be here at SourceJunky who decided that I should bring my PC with me for communal use. I don’t even get to look forward to getting hammered every night, since I am the official taxi to and from the hotel. My main concern is that without the time-consuming CSS tournament to amuse me, I may end up being incredibly bored. On the other hand, I am really looking forward to Friday Night Out – which is technically Friday Night In - Show 4. Assuming that Multiplay open the ports so that we can connect to Ventrilo, it should be an entertaining night. I am also looking forward to meeting some new people, and seeing a lot of friendly faces – if you’re at the event come and find me – I’ll be the one floating around in a SourceJunky t-shirt, with ‘emo’ hair and a goatee. I’m pretty sure we’ll make it to the event, as long as I don’t get us both killed through sleep-deprived awful driving. Don’t tell Gonzo (he wont get chance to read this before we get to LAN), but he’s in for a real treat on the way down to Newbury; I’ve burned off two CDs worth of all the loudest and most annoying music that I absolutely MUST sing along to whenever I hear. The poor guy plans to sleep in the car on the way down there, ha! For those of you that have heard my ‘singing’ you’ll understand that he is about as likely to get sleep as I am to win x-factor. Anyway I’m going to dismantle my PC now, and wake sleeping beauty. I am pretty sure Dr Gonzo is destroying my bed linen in the other room; if he’s not ripping my sheets up I don’t know what that noise is… |
