I managed to get us here without causing many major road traffic incidents, just about. We got here at about 5pm and walked past all the non-important people that were in the long queue to get in, much to their obvious annoyance. After a brief bit of banter between Gonzo and the ladies at the check in desk, we got our passes and set about beginning the mammoth task of hefting my three ton PC up to the second floor. A very amenable Irish security guard was only too happy to let “staff” into the event, even though no one else was allowed in until 6pm. Neither myself nor Dr Gonzo felt the need to point out that we were in fact press and not staff.
I had a Clanbase Opencup game to play with my team, paperTIGER, at 6.30pm and so I went to see the nice “blue shirts” downstairs to get the server and Ventrilo ports opened. Unfortunately as Multiplay do not guarantee any service until the Friday, I didn’t get the most welcoming of receptions. The man I needed to speak to was apparently in the Berkshire stand trying to get the network setup. I was advised to come back just before the game and they would “see what they could do”. I did this, and thankfully a legend of a network admin opened the ports for me so that I could play my game. The game didn’t take as long as I had expected, we destroyed some Finnish team on de_nuke and they rage quit in the second half – the first time in five years that I have seen that happen in an official. With the game out of the way I was free to start an evening of heavy drinking so I headed down to the bar to do just that. As I am the official SourceJunky taxi service from Friday onwards I took full advantage of not having to drive last night and got myself absolutely smashed. It never fails to surprise me when random people come and buy me a drink, often times when I have no idea who they are. I’m not sure if they’re buying me a drink because they like me, or because they’ve heard I talk even more random nonsense than usual after I’ve had a drink or three. Truth be told I am a complete lightweight; I don’t drink often so when I do it hits me like a Mack truck. Combine this with the fact that I didn’t sleep on Wednesday night, and I hadn’t eaten at all since our late night pizza and the infamous re-creation of the Sahara desert in the medium of garlic bread. Needless to say, after about three pints I was absolutely wankered. Gonzo was already in the bar, helping to prop it up, I met him there and ordered my drink; lager and Black. The barman turned to Gonzo and asked for his order at which point Gonzo loudly proclaimed that he would like a non-homosexual drink and got a round in for his table. I don’t remember a massive amount after that, just fleeting moments of a highly amusing evening. The highlights included trying to convince Nocturnal Alcoholics that one of their players was obviously gay, much to the dismay of said player’s girlfriend who was sat next to him at the time. No less than three people offered to get their tackle out “for the ED forums”, why does this shit happen to me? Honestly guys, my standards are slightly higher than “has cock”. Most of the evening was friendly and fun, there was this one incident though that I have to mention. Me and a few others were stood outside the bar, in the freezing cold having a cigarette. Some guy walks past us with a group of his friends and shouts out “oh great we have to walk past all the smokers to get to the bar”. Now, I am used to the drug of my choice being socially unacceptable – despite the fact that you intake more carcinogens standing over a barbeque than you do from passive smoking. This guy, however was just plain rude. I took immediately offence to the mouthy little shit and asked him whether the fact that we had to stand outside like lepers (when he could sit in the comfort of the nice warm pub to quaff his beverage of choice) wasn’t enough for him, followed by a disparaging comment about his parentage. I’m a nice guy most of the time, but occasionally someone says or does something that just plain pisses me off, this was one such occasion. As the night progressed I got more and more drunk, which lead to the volume of my verbal diarrhoea increasing exponentially to the point where I am pretty sure they could hear me in the Berkshire stand – well they might if they weren’t far too busy listening to the melodic sounds of a nameless soul-destroying MMOG. It was around this time that Gonzo and Tils of xciteuk came stumbling back into the bar proclaiming all sorts of things about strange furry porn they had apparently found on my PC. This was clearly my cue to leave, so I quietly slipped out, grabbed my sleeping bag and staggered blindly across to the red room. I seem to remember shouting at a security guard that his non-trained pet Rottweiler aught to be on a lead, a few moments later I was blissfully unconscious. |
