Government Minister To Talk About Games
Posted by ViniH on Tuesday, 09 October 2007, 00:46
Within the space of 24 hours we're linking stories from both the BBC and Sky News that are relevant to us.  How fast is gaming moving towards mainstream?

Margaret Hodge, the Minister of State for Culture, Media & Sport has been invited to give a speech at this year's Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association AGM.

This is something we should keep an eye on... the government is starting to take notice of the impact of gaming, especially on children.  Nothing good ever comes of government sticking it's nose into anything.  Read more for the link and some excerpts. http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,91221-1287373,00.html

A choice quote:

"We are thrilled that Margaret Hodge will be attending this year's ELSPA AGM," said Paul Jackson, Director General of ELSPA. "Her attendance lends further weight to the opinion that the government is continuing to recognise the huge cultural and financial impact video and computer games enjoy."

The forum will also address the burning issue of the rise of negative publicity in the games industry over the last year.

(Several political and social studies on societal breakdown and violence have cited computer games as having a potentially negative influence on young gamers such as addiction, obesity, truancy and crime.)

Games, the new crack?

I agree Gaming needs to be finally recognised as a growing sport/culture however i disagree that gaming affects how people think, people make their OWN MINDS up when killing people in real life, everyone should KNOW the difference between a "game" and real life. Im just gonna randomly say "oh yeh let me get my knife out, and i will run down to work, and then get a clutch with my M4 i brought for the ride", its stupid, and for too long, violent games/films have been blamed for the downfall of people. Has anyone not considered the possibility of their own brain, or any recent developments in their life etc.

Has anyone considered its the parents fault for letting there 12 year old son play an 18+ game? Off course if someone plays a violet game at that sort of age it might inflict some damage on there mental help. And if there play those games at 12 theres normally a good reason.

we play 18 games at 12 because they are fun, i was playing old quake and hexen before i was even 10, and they are 18 games (

I played GTA1 when I was about 11 and I only occasionally go on killings sprees after stealing a car and destroying the evidence with a rocket launcher.
